What to consider before taking an ice bath?

Before deciding to take the plunge in an ice bath, here are some things that scientists and researchers recommend that you consider:

– Speak with your GP or doctor before taking an ice bath. This is especially important if you have any underlying health conditions or have sensitivities to cold.

– Leading up to the ice bath, try and prepare yourself physically and mentally by taking cold showers. This helps you to understand and manage your body’s reaction to cold water exposure, ready for your ice bath experience.

– Don’t push your body past its limits. Some ways to take it easy on your first ice bath include slowly submerging yourself, adding more ice to lower the temperature after you’re already in the ice bath and slowly building up the amount of time you spend in an ice bath each time.

How long should you spend in an ice bath?

On average, people will spend between 5 to 10 minutes in an ice bath. If it’s your first time, your body will need time to adjust to this new experience, so make sure you use ice baths safely and do not push your body beyond its limits.

You should NOT stay in ice baths for longer than 10 to 15 minutes. It is also recommended that you do not stay in an ice bath for the maximum of 15 minutes if it is your first time.

Do I need to put my whole body in the ice bath?

To maximise the benefits of an ice bath, researchers recommend that you immerse your whole body. A full body submerge leads to a higher rate of blood vessel constriction that helps to flush out the toxins and lactic acid from your system.

However, we know this isn’t easy as a beginner as we found out when we tried it for the first time. So, if it’s your first time, we recommend slowly building up to the full body submerge. Start by submerging your feet and lower legs and then progress to your chest when you feel comfortable.

What is the best thing to do after an ice bath?

After taking the plunge into an ice bath it is important to raise your temperature slowly and safely. The first thing you should do is dry yourself off. It is recommended that you avoid taking a shower directly after exiting the ice bath to prevent the hot water from shocking your body.

Instead, wait for several minutes to allow your body to re-adjust and then you can take a warm shower to help raise your internal body temperature. You can also drink a warm drink such as tea or coffee to help you speed up the process.

It can take up to 20 minutes for some people to get rid of the chill and return to normal.

What should you wear to go in an ice bath?

For an ice bath, you should wear shorts and a t-shirt to protect your skin during your exposure to cold temperatures. Some people also wear socks or booties to help protect their feet and to stop them from feeling too cold.

It is also recommended that you have a set of dry clothes ready for when you exit the ice bath to help get your body temperature to return to normal.
